Students during this time assist research scientists on Saint Kitts in laboratories and spend one day per week working with Pharmacists in a public pharmacy on the Island.
After the sixth semester, students complete their clinical education in the United States. Students are required to complete 2,000 hours of experiential education in clinical hospital settings along with medical students, interns, and residents. During this time the student will work within the hospital pharmacy as well as attend grand rounds, teaching rounds, seminars, conferences, and assist in the implementation of treatment protocols for patients. Students will assist in the development of drug treatment programs and monitor the patient for needed changes. The student while in the hospital will be available to assist in the education of patients and will provide on going assistance to physicians and other health professionals providing supportive documentation and vital statistics to support those providing direct care to patients. If available, students will be asked to participate in research programs and on-going new drug trials, applications and development. In the eighth and final semester of study, the College of Pharmacy requires that students select from a list of approved electives. These are to include community pharmacies, ambulatory clinics, research laboratories and with permission, hospital based pharmacology.
